Harlem Barbershop Cuts For A Cure
It was fades, edge ups, and cuts for a cause in Harlem.
Denny Moe's Superstar Barbershop on Frederick Douglass Boulevard is holding its third annual Cutting for a Cure hair cutting marathon this weekend.
Medical staff offered free screenings for conditions including high blood pressure, kidney disease and HIV.
Owner Dennis Mitchell said he hopes the screenings will encourage more community members to regularly visit a doctor.
"We just want to make sure that Harlem is healthy," he said. "We want to bridge the gap between African American men and hospitals because it's a natural fact that we don't go to a hospital or to a doctor on a regular basis."
"I think we should have this regularly because this is something very important for everyone to be checked out, their blood pressure, their cholesterol, make sure that you are healthy," said one attendee.
Mitchell says he was inspired to start the event after being diagnosed with diabetes in 2010.
